When to Visit Zakopane

Zakopane is a year-round destination, each season offering a unique experience. Winter transforms the town into a snow-covered wonderland, perfect for skiing and snowboarding. While it can be quite cold, the atmosphere is magical. Summer is ideal for hiking, with Morskie Oko being one of the most popular spots for nature lovers. Getting to Zakopane

Here, you’ll find a lively atmosphere, perfect for exploring on foot. For getting to more remote spots like Morskie Oko or Dolina Chochołowska, minibuses are a convenient and affordable option. Taxis, bikes, and horse-drawn carriages are also available for those looking for a more unique experience.

Top Attractions in Zakopane

  • Krupówki Street: The beating heart of Zakopane, this pedestrian street is bustling with life. It’s full of shops selling handmade goods, local food stalls offering delicacies like oscypek cheese, and cozy highlander taverns (karczmy) to enjoy traditional Polish food.
  • Gubałówka: For panoramic views of Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, head to Gubałówka. You can reach the summit either by hiking a 300-meter trail or taking the cable car for a quick ride. At the top, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas of the region.
  • Morskie Oko: A must-see for nature enthusiasts, Morskie Oko is a stunning mountain lake surrounded by towering peaks. The hike to the lake is relatively easy and takes about a day, making it a perfect day trip from Zakopane.
  • Dolina Pięciu Stawów (The Valley of Five Lakes): This picturesque valley in the Tatra Mountains is known for its five stunning lakes and beautiful hiking trails. The hike to this spot from Morskie Oko takes 2-3 hours and offers amazing views along the way.

  • Giewont: This iconic peak is shaped like a sleeping knight and is surrounded by fascinating local legends. The hike to Giewont is moderate, with some sections requiring chains for safety.
  • Kasprowy Wierch: A popular peak in Zakopane, Kasprowy Wierch is easily accessible by cable car or a 3-hour hike. At the summit, there’s a meteorological observatory, restaurant, and incredible views.
  • Dolina Chochołowska: This tranquil valley is ideal for a relaxing walk and is particularly family-friendly. It’s located about 10 km from Zakopane and is accessible by car or minibus.
