When people talk about Hanoi, they usually describe it as chaotic. At first, I wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about. From the airport to the hotel, the traffic reminded me of Bangkok—busy but manageable. It wasn’t until I wandered out into the streets for the first time that I truly understood why Hanoi carries its reputation for wild energy.

Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital and second-largest city, is full of charm. With French-era architecture, ancient pagodas, tranquil lakes, and vibrant street life, it offers a blend of old and new that feels raw and authentic. It’s noisy, crowded, and sometimes overwhelming, but also endlessly fascinating.

Where to Stay in Hanoi

For our visit, we split our time between two hotels, with a night cruise in Halong Bay in between. Back in the city, we stayed near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, the best area for easy access to most attractions. Budget travelers will feel at home in the Old Quarter, where lively hostels and backpacker bars keep the nights buzzing.

Our first stay was at the Acoustic Hotel & Spa, a cozy property with warm hospitality. The staff welcomed us with fresh fruit and drinks, and we loved having a balcony overlooking the city. Breakfast was included, which made it even better value.

Later, we moved to Hotel de l’Opera Hanoi MGallery by Sofitel in the French Quarter. The design was stunning, with elegant rooms, a large bathroom, and plush bedding. The rooftop pool had an incredible view of the Opera House, and the breakfast spread was easily the best I’ve had at any hotel.

Best Things to Do in Hanoi

Old Quarter
You can’t visit Hanoi without exploring the Old Quarter. This maze of narrow streets is organized by trades and filled with shops, cafes, and buzzing nightlife. It’s hectic during the week, but weekends are extra special when traffic is restricted for night markets. Streets fill with vendors, and you can shop for hours under strings of lights.

French Quarter
With wide boulevards, chic hotels, and colonial architecture, this neighborhood feels like a slice of Europe—until the motorbikes zip past and remind you where you are.

Hanoi Opera House
A stunning landmark inspired by Paris’ Opera Garnier, this is one of the city’s most iconic buildings. It still hosts performances and is considered Hanoi’s most prestigious theatre.

Train Street
One of the most unique experiences in Hanoi is visiting the narrow street where a train passes twice daily. Cafés line the tracks, and it’s become a favorite photo spot for travelers.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Surroundings
This imposing structure is the resting place of Vietnam’s national hero. The nearby Presidential Palace, One Pillar Pagoda, and Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House make this area a must-visit for history lovers.

Water Puppet Theatre
A traditional art form that originated in Vietnam, the water puppet show tells folk stories with wooden puppets gliding across a stage of water. It’s entertaining for all ages and worth seeing at least once.

Tran Quoc Pagoda
Hanoi’s oldest Buddhist temple, over 1,500 years old, sits on West Lake. The striking red pagoda tower makes it especially photogenic.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral
Built in 1886, this Gothic Revival church was modeled after Notre Dame in Paris. It remains the city’s largest Catholic church and a significant landmark.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake
In the heart of Hanoi, this lake is a peaceful escape from the chaos of the streets. It’s perfect for an early morning stroll or a late-night wander. At its center sits Turtle Tower, linked to a legend of a golden turtle and a magical sword.

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology
An excellent museum showcasing the culture and traditions of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. The outdoor exhibits with traditional houses are especially fascinating.

Coffee Culture
Hanoi takes its coffee seriously. A tour is the best way to sample its variety, from coconut coffee to the famous egg coffee made with whipped yolks and condensed milk. Each cup tells part of Vietnam’s story as one of the world’s leading coffee exporters.

Getting Around

Navigating Hanoi can be overwhelming, but ride-hailing apps like Grab make it much easier. Whether by car or motorbike, it’s affordable and saves the stress of haggling.

Final Thoughts

Hanoi is a city that grows on you. It’s messy and unpredictable, but that’s also its magic. A few days here give you enough time to soak in the culture, dive into its food scene, and explore its unique neighborhoods. Pair your stay with a trip to Halong Bay or the mountains of northern Vietnam, and you’ll leave with memories that last a lifetime.
