This hormone affects both men and women, shaping not only physical traits but also mood, energy, and overall well-being. Yet, misconceptions continue to cloud the conversation. Let’s set the record straight and explore what testosterone really does, how imbalances affect health, and what can be done to restore balance.

Common Myths About Testosterone

Myth 1: Only men produce testosterone
Although testosterone is more abundant in men, women produce it too—just at lower levels. In men, the testes are the main source, while in women, the ovaries contribute. This hormone helps regulate body composition, hair growth, sex drive, and reproductive health. For men, it also drives puberty changes such as voice deepening and the development of reproductive organs.

Myth 2: High testosterone equals aggression
The idea that testosterone automatically fuels aggression is misleading. While it can influence behaviors tied to dominance, aggression is far more complex. Other hormones, like cortisol, interact with testosterone to shape behavior. Genetics, mental health, and environment also play significant roles. So, high testosterone alone doesn’t make someone aggressive.

Myth 3: More testosterone means better athletic performance
Testosterone supports muscle growth and energy, but athletic ability isn’t simply determined by hormone levels. Training, genetics, nutrition, and recovery all factor into performance. Supplements claiming to boost testosterone are popular, but their effectiveness is uncertain—and prolonged use can carry serious health risks. Unless prescribed by a doctor, they’re best avoided.

Types of Testosterone

In the body, testosterone exists in two main forms:

  • Free testosterone: the active form, though it only makes up a small percentage of total testosterone.
  • Bound testosterone: attached to proteins like sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and inactive until released.

Because both forms matter, doctors often look at multiple biomarkers—including total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, and the free testosterone index (FTI)—to understand whether levels are balanced.

How Testosterone Shapes Health

Testosterone affects a wide range of functions in both men and women, including:

  • Reproductive development and fertility
  • Muscle growth and maintenance
  • Bone density and strength
  • Libido and sexual health
  • Mood and cognitive function

Levels naturally vary by age, sex, and individual biology. In men, a typical healthy range is higher than in women, but both require enough of the hormone to support normal functioning.

When Testosterone Is Too High

Excess testosterone rarely happens without outside influence. In men, it’s often linked to anabolic steroid use, which can bring side effects such as infertility, cardiovascular problems, liver damage, and mood swings. In women, high testosterone may result from conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), leading to irregular cycles, hair growth, or acne.

When Testosterone Is Too Low

For men, low testosterone can trigger hair thinning, reduced muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and even breast enlargement. Women may experience reduced bone strength, lower sex drive, mood issues, or difficulty concentrating. Causes vary widely, from medical conditions and certain medications to obesity and lifestyle factors.

Addressing Testosterone Imbalances

If you suspect a hormone imbalance, consulting a doctor is the first step. Treatment depends on the cause. Many people benefit from lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management, and a nutrient-rich diet—particularly foods high in zinc. In some cases, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be recommended, though it comes with potential risks and should only be pursued under medical guidance.
